The Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong is one of the more tragic episodes in the city's rich history. In this unit we will look at the question "What was life like under the Japanese occupation, 1941-45?", considering changes to the economy, politics, education, culture, religion, and everyday life of the citizens of Hong Kong. We will come to understand that "conflict and war may shift power and authority, affecting far reaching consequences on society". This is our unit's statement of inquiry.
Before we consider our unit question and consider our statement of inquiry, I would like to first examine just why the Japanese invaded Hong Kong, and many other places, in the first place. Your assignment is, in groups of three (and with ONE computer only!), to investigate the reasons for Japanese expansion, 1931-41 by looking at at least FOUR reliable web resources. Start your research using the Gale World History in Context database linked from VSA's Library page. You must do the following:
Create a shared google document with the other students in your group and answer the questions. I will ask you to then place the google document in a folder that I will share with you.
